Dynamical properties of a family of collisionless models of elliptical galaxies

چکیده
N-body simulations of collisionless collapse have offered important clues to the construction of realistic stellar dynamical models of elliptical galaxies. Such simulations confirm and quantify the qualitative expectation that rapid collapse of a self-gravitating collisionless system, initially cool and significantly far from equilibrium, leads to incomplete relaxation, that is to a quasi-equilibrium configuration characterized by isotropic, quasi-Maxwellian distribution of stellar orbits in the inner regions and by radially biased anisotropic pressure in the outer parts. In earlier studies, as illustrated in a number of papers several years ago (see [2] and references therein), the attention was largely focused on the successful comparison between the models (constructed under the qualitative clues offered by the N-body simulations mentioned above) and the observations. In this paper we revisit the problem of incomplete violent relaxation, by making a direct comparison between the detailed properties of a family of distribution functions and those of the products of collisionless collapse found in N-body simulations.

A family of models of partially relaxed stellar systems
N-body simulations of collisionless collapse have offered important clues to the construction of realistic stellar dynamical models of elliptical galaxies. Understanding this idealized and relatively simple process, by which stellar systems can reach partially relaxed equilibrium configurations (characterized by isotropic central regions and radially anisotropic envelopes), is a prerequisite to...

متن کاملShould Elliptical Galaxies Be Idealised as Collisionless Equilibria?
This talk summarises several different lines of argument suggesting that one should not expect cuspy nonaxisymmetric galaxies to exist as robust, long-lived collisionless equilibria, i.e., that such objects should not be idealised as time-independent solutions to the collisionless Boltzmann equation. Should elliptical galaxies be visualised as objects that spend most of their lives in or near a...
متن کاملA family of models of partially relaxed stellar systems I . Dynamical properties
Recently we have found that a family of models of partially relaxed, anisotropic stellar systems, inspired earlier by studies of incomplete violent relaxation, exhibits some interesting thermodynamic properties. Here we present a systematic investigation of its dynamical characteristics, in order to establish the basis for a detailed comparison with simulations of collisionless collapse, planne...
متن کاملFormation of Elliptical Galaxies by Collisionless Equal and Unequal Mass Mergers
We performed a large set of collisionless N-body simulations of merging diskgalaxies with mass ratios of 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, and 4:1 using the special purpose hardware GRAPE. These simulations were used to examine whether the formation of elliptical galaxies can be explained in the context of the merger scenario. The photometric, kinematical and isophotal properties of the simulated merger remnants ...
